Joshua Lederberg partilhou o Nobel de Medicina em 1958 com George Wells Beadle e Edward Lawrie Tatum «pelo trabalho respeitante a recombinação genética e genética bacteriana». Ao anunciar o prémio, o Instituto Karolinska referiu que Lederberg descobrira que «diferentes tipos de bactérias poderiam ser cruzados para produzir descendentes contendo uma nova combinação de factores genéticos».

Lederberg, que organizou o Departmento de Genética Médica na Stanford University Medical School (1957), de que foi Chairman entre 1957 e1958, foi director do Kennedy Laboratories for Molecular Medicine (1962) e presidente da Rockefeller University (1978-1990), foi o pioneiro da microbiologia e imunologia modernas que lançou as fundações da engenharia genética e da abordagem genética da medicina. A actividade de Lederberg não se restringiu à biologia e introduziu a ciência da computação e a inteligência artificial nos laboratórios de biologia.

Whether they’re right, or whether they’re missing a wider, bigger, more important, story becomes secondary. Fuck it, we can always go back and edit.

Except they never get the chance to go back and edit: not when that have five more stories to file that day. Look at the 277 stories about the Cole case. See how many reporters just rehashed the lede – the size of the damages – and Ford’s response, without asking a single new question, or presenting so much as half a new fact. But then again, how would they? That would have involved a single fucking phone call.
